I was in the mood for a summer-themed book, and I found this one on sale at Indigo. I had heard so many great things about this book, and since it was in almost everyone's top books of 2014, I figured I had to read it. And it was absolutely amazing.
Rating : ☺☺☺☺☺
Do I recommend it : Yes! This is a perfect book for the summer time, or if you want to be cheered up after reading a sad book!
Would I reread it : Perhaps I will.. Next summer?
Since You've Been Gone is a story about Emily, who is super shy, unlike her best friend Sloane. They had the whole summer planned out, until the day Sloane just vanishes, without telling Emily anything. The only thing she left behind is a list of 13 things for Emily to do, like apple picking at night and...skinny dipping. Emily is confused, but deep down, she feels like in order to find Sloane again, she has to do all 13 things. The book therefore follows her summer, as she tries to complete the list, with the help of friends she meets along the way.
↙ What I didn't like about the book :
I can't think of anything I didn't like about the book, honestly. Everything about this book was great. I did find one thing that put me off, and it is the same thing that put me off for Anna and The French Kiss. It was the fact that the love interest of the main character was already in a relationship, and although this book didn't focus on a love story at all, I found it hard to see how the relationship between Emily and Frank (the love interest) would develop, and even when I did feel romance come, it was very predictable.
↗ What I liked about the book :
The writing was absolutely charming. I had never read any of Morgan Matson's books before, but I did expect the usual contemporary. It was that, but 10 times better. Matson's writing style is definitely something that keeps you captivated and never leaves you bored.
The playlists in the book were a great touch. Matson added a few playlists, for when Emily and Frank ran, and when they were in the car, etc. It's such a fun and subtle way to let us know more about the characters and who they are.
The characters were my favourite thing about this book. SYBG hands down has the best cast of characters in Y.A. literature that I've ever read about. Their different personalities complimented each other's, and the friendships they developed were so beautiful to read about. Matson really created my #squadgoals, not gonna lie.
This was an amazing book overall and I highly suggest you read it if you're in need of a good and fun read. Everything about this book was amazing, and if it's your first Morgan Matson book, like it was for me, it'll definitely make you want to read more of her books.
