I was very happy to receive this book for view from Vanya Ferreira, the author of this short story. The synopsis intrigued me, as it included magical creatures and sounded incredibly mysterious, so I gave it a go and really enjoyed it!
Rating : ☺☺☺☺☹
Do I recommend it : Yes, if you like vampire/werewolf stories and want a quick read.
Would I reread it : Probably not as it was on my eBook.
The Story of Lucius Cane is a short story following a peculiar sort of vampire, an even more peculiar werewolf, and an less-than-expected encounter.
↙ What I didn't like about the book :
The length! I think that this book had so much potential it could be turned into a great novel, by adding a few more characters and plot twists. The fact that it was a short story made it feel condensed and made it feel like a lot of information was cut short.
I definitely did not deeply connect with the characters. Maybe because them being vampires/werewolves and men, I couldn't relate, but they just didn't speak to me. I did not feel moved by their stories and was left indifferent.
↗ What I liked about the book :
What I really liked was the different approach on a cliché trope. The way Ferreira uses mythical creatures that everyone has heard about, but puts them in a situation that is completely different and unexpected. Although there were some gruesome moments, the author describes them in a way that doesn't repel you, but intrigues you instead.
The overall writing style made this a very easy and quick read, very entertaining for my long bus rides in the mornings. The way it was written makes the reader fall into the story and it is very easy to imagine the world around you, even though there wasn't much world building. The characters were simply described the right way, and it was fun to imagine them as you wish (I imagined Cane as Baz from Carry On).
The experience of reading a review book is somehow always more fun than reading a book on your own, because you know it isn't something you'd normally pick up, and end up absolutely loving it. If you wish to order the book, here it is!
Thanks for reading,
