Hi! This is a review for DJ Swykert's amazing book he sent me for review, I hope you enjoy!
Rating : ☺☺☺☹☹
Do I recommend it : For anyone who likes a good, raw adult fiction novel, yes.
Would I reread it : Probably not as it was on my eBook.
The Pool Boy's Beatitude, by DJ Swykert, is a book that follows the life of Jack, who is a man of many words, who doesn't seem to care, but also cares too much. We follow his day to day life, as he gets over a relationship ending badly, and as he meets new people, all the while doing his mediocre job of a pool boy.
↙ What I didn't like about the book :
The main, and only thing, I disliked about this book was the plot. Now don't get me wrong, it wasn't a boring book AT ALL. But I found some parts of it to go by too fast, and others to go by too slowly. Which means that sometimes I would read pages at once and the story would fly by, and other time I could barely read half a page. When books do this to me, I am always really tempted to put them down, and sadly, that's what I did with this book for a few months. Picking it back up again was refreshing, because I love stories that follow a main character in his daily life, as he/she goes through weird and realistic adventures, which is exactly what this book is.
↗ What I liked about the book :
The writing style is absolutely great and I was so impressed by it within the first few pages. The writing flows and the author's choice of words is definitely a huge aspect of what made this book interesting.
The main character himself surprised me as well. At first, he seems despicable (which he is, depending on how you see him), but you learn to love him and his witty jokes. The way the reader sees him is a huge part of this book, because it seems to me that his personality could be interpreted in so many ways. He could be totally careless, or maybe broken inside, or he could be mentally unstable, and reading this book whilst trying to figure him out was a great adventure for a reader. I also really liked the character of Rosemary, especially in the beginning, and I liked what she added to the story.
Although I did enjoy reading this book, I am in a way happy that I am done with it. This is a book that is totally different from what you will read, and because it isn't within my favorite genres, I don't think that I was able to appreciate this as much as someone who is used to adult fiction. I will definitely recommend this if you want to read something refreshing and well thought out!
