Believe it or not, I haven't bought a book since January. Jan-u-a-ry. For a book blogger, that's an insane amount of time, and although I really, really want to go buy Me Before You, I won't. Here's how I did it!
A book buying ban is, for most bookworms, a hard thing to achieve. We all clearly know we don't need that many books, yet we continue to buy them as if our lives depended on it (which they kind of do, to be honest). However, I think it is universal that we don't read nearly as many books as we buy, which is a bad thing. I decided to go on a book buying ban because I realized I was overwhelmed with the amount of books I owned, and couldn't read all of them. Here are my tips if you would like to take a break too!
Timing is, believe it or not, a very crucial element. If you start your BBB in the summer, you're more likely to fail, because summer is the time for books and higher salaries. I started mine when the semester started again, and it was really smart, because I didn't have nearly as much time to read or to buy books. Therefore, you should start your BBB when it is almost exam season, or close to the end of the months, when you have to pay off your debts, so it makes it easier to cut back on spending!
My intentions were simple: read the books I already own. If you don't have the intention of reading more or investing your money somewhere else, it is likely that you'll end up buying books again, because you don't see the harm of it. Make sure you know why you're on a BBB!
I have to admit, I did want to save a bit of money. I realized this after seeing the entire Hunger Games box set at the thrift store, in almost perfect condition, for around 10$. I then realized that a lot of my Harry Potter and other cherished books all come from the thrift store. One of my favorite quotes is "If you read what everyone else is reading, you'll think like everyone else" and I think it speaks volumes. I've decided to cut back from buying mainstream books and maybe when I start buying books again, I'll look for underrated or hidden gems in the thrift store!
Here were my tips and hopefully they were slightly useful! I definitely had time breaking down these tips for you guys and you know what, don't go on a full-on BAN. Just try to...buy less? We all know that usually fails though so keep me updated guys!!
